The Boys Club was one of Lord Egerton's deepest
and sustained interests. When
he died in 1958 the town of Knutsford learnt that by his Will
of 1954 he had made
provisions to ensure that that his lifetime work and generosity
on behalf of the
boys of Knutsford would continue and be developed. To comply
with Lord
Egerton's wishes his Executors created in 1964 a Trust with
the object of
continuing the Club for the education and recreation of the
boys of Knutsford and surrounding areas. This included the
transfer to the Trust of certain land, buildings and securities.
Finally the Trust provided that in accordance with his Lordship's
wishes the Club would be administered and managed by a local
Knutsford Committee.
When Lord Egerton founded the Club its membership comprised
only boys. Activities at that time were largely confined to
football, cricket, snooker and table tennis. The Club was originally
housed in the "Old Town Hall" Knutsford, a building
that is now a furniture store occupied by Allan & Appleyard.
Regular summer holidays involving hiking and outdoor pursuits
were organised based on a hostel
in Windermere.
In 19 a decision was taken to sell the Club's premises in
the centre
of Knutsford and use the proceeds from the sale to construct
a new purpose built youth club and sports hall on land owned
by the Trust in Mereheath Lane. During the early 1980s, the
then Management Committeee recognized the need to allow girls
to use the Club's facilities and take part in its activities..
To formalize this an approach was made to the Charity Commission
who subsequently gave approval
for an amendment to the original Trust Deed and for the Club's
name to be
changed to The Egerton Youth Club. Since 1964 the Club has
functioned and operated to provide the young people of Knutsford
with the facilities and support
to meet and take part in sport, leisure and social activities.
During this time there have been profound social changes
and the Management Committee has recognized the impact of
these changes on the manner in which youth services, sport
and leisure facilities need to be provided for young people.
It is still the fundamental policy and aim to operate the
Egerton Youth Club in accordance with the sound principles
set out in the Trust Deed of 1964. To accommodate the challenges
arising from social change it is the aim of the Management
Committe and staff to extend and improve the scope and quality
of the facilities and available support to meet the needs
of young people. This is
being achieved by working in alliance and cooperation with
the local authority
youth services, the Youth Federation, Duke of Edinburgh's
Award Scheme,
county and national sport associations, the local community
and other
youth organizations.
